We tried to camp at Die Mond in September 2008 but they had had floods, YES FLOODS, a few days previously where the water from 2 streams converged and the water levels rose 2 meters and washed through the campsite! We had to use one of their cottages instead. It is a lovely tranquil place to stay. And yes, the phones lines are often "down" but don't let that stop you from just arriving at this place. As long as it is not over a long weekend or during school holidays, you could have this place all to yourselves like we did.

Thanks for your response Christian. Yes the Karoo is quite special and has a beauty all of its own.
Enjoy your stay in Switzerland and make the most of seeing as much of Europe as you can while you are there and come back home soon to enjoy SA.
Cheers and Happy New Year to you.

Thanks Peter! We so often think of the Karoo as just a dry boring place, yet there is so much beauty and places of interests. It is a pleasure reading your blog...make me home-sick (currently in Switzerland).

Thanks Nelly, yes we have to do some trips together in the coming year. We have a very fascinating and interesting country and so much that still has to be seen and experienced.
I've no idea how or why Verkeerdevlei and that particular valley runs east/west and all the others run north/south. It happened before my time.:-)
Cheers

Lovely Pete! Keep posting these stories,
would like to know more what the doc had to say about the rocks, and the markers etc.
must do a trip with you guys to learn more about our fascinating country. Deep in history, and we don't even know about it.
Whats with the mountains running North/South vs West East? please explain how that happens, is there a fault somewhere?
let us know... maybe another doc can explain that for all of us?

An accurate and entertaining report. Been there with Nissan 1400 & 1150GS motorcycle.
"Rose of the Karoo" restaurant has deteriorated, we walked in & literally walked out.The best is "Die Dorpshuis" opposite the shell garage in van Riebeeck street opposite the church. Popular place for bikers & travelers,it's a must for lunch on our off road bike trips from cape Town.

Athol I dont want to tell you that you can and when you damage your car you come back to me. What I can tell you is that the locals use normal cars to drive there and back and if I still had my little Golf I would do it with the Golf. Remember you cannot do it with a trailer or caravan, you are not allowed to tow anything

As long as your little car is not a sports car you should make it
