I did my fourth hike up Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge on Saturday and realized how many people there are who are totally misinformed about this route.
I am sure that more than half the hikers either did not have enough water with them or did not wear adequate shoes.
If you would like to walk up Table Mountain please realise that this is not a fun walk. You have to be somewhat fit but most of all, you need to take at least one litre of water per person and you need to wear proper shoes. Comfortable running shoes or tekkies will do, but the best is proper hiking shoes. We saw many people with slip-slops and even a guy with slippers.
Where to start
Drive up to the cable car lower station. Drive pass the cable car lower station and about 1.5 Km after the cable car lower station you will see the sign for the start of the Platteklip Gorge hiking trail.
Start of Table Mounatin Hike
The route is clearly marked and all you have to do is follow the markers pointing you to Platteklip Gorge. There are only two places in the beginning where you can go wrong but both are marked clearly. The first you can choose between Platteklip and back to the cable car lower station and the second you choose between Platteklip and Devils Peak and is also clearly marked.

How is the route?
It is steep climbing all the way. Thousands of hikers use this route each year so it is well maintained. It is a wide path leading you up the mountain and they packed the rocks in stair formation where necessary.
It will take you about 2 hours to reach the top. You will climb about 600 metres over a trail length of about 3.5 kilometers.
After you reached the top you can go to the cafeteria area close to the upper station and enjoy some fresh juice. Make sure you fill your water bottles at the bathrooms. The water is safe to drink. If you dont trust the water just buy more at the store.
